Dateline Detroit Posted Wed, Mar 22nd 9:27AM by Grace Lee Today's my last day in Michigan. I arrived on Thursday night for a screening at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor. The turnout was great -- tons of people showed up (and it was snowing!) and people asked good questions. Afterwards, two U of M students Eunice and Crystal took me out for a bubble tea where we ran into some more students who were at the screening.
The next day, spent some time meeting some folks from the Korean Studies Program at U of M...including the artist David Chung, who showed me some excerpts from his next documentary project about Koreans in Kazakhstan. I also got to spend time with Hye Seung Chung, a Korean cinema scholar and Meredith Woo, the director of the program.
Yesterday, arrived in Detroit thanks to Steve Moon, from the Uof M's Office of multiethnic student Affairs (also a co-sponsor of the screening). We arrived at the Boggs Center on the east side of Detroit, a place I've watched grow and expand over the last five years. We spent some time with Grace Lee Boggs, who is as sharp as ever, constantly quizzing me on what I've been up to, dispensing advice to Steve about how we can redefine education at the University. So much of higher education today is just seen as a career stepping stone, rather than about really learning and becoming students of life.
Later, we headed over to Barth Hall near the Wayne State University campus, where a benefit reception for Detroit Summer and Detroit Asian Youth Center was starting. Got to meet a bunch of people I've met over the years and who were around as we were filming. The screening began at 8pm, and the hall was packed -- there were probably about 200 people there -- way more than what the organizers expected. It was really exciting to be in the room, showing this film, with people who are so committed to Grace, Detroit Summer, and the Detroit Asian Youth program.
